Some of our best conversations throuhgout the years have been in the car. Just before seeing my daughter’s new apartment, we talked about her exploration of various spiritual traditions, not just philosophically, but in practice. I told her I had two things to say to that: first, that there are many pitfalls along such paths; secondly, I’ve been waiting 30 years to have this conversation. We had both explored Christmas Humphrey’s Buddhism some years back, and we were both raised Catholic, of course, but almost secular attitudes prevailed until now. I never had a problem with that, but now, there’s a full existence to explore, not just the physcially pragmatic parts. She even has an altar of sorts with special items, not unlike my own scripture stand, which in some form or another I’ve had since college. This all seems so, so right to me.
